Kids Music Review: Roll Up! Roll Up!
by Sally Murphy

Kids love the circus, and they will love this new CD from Australian group, The Hooley Dooleys.

Everyone loves the circus, and now you and your kids can have a circus in your own lounge room, with the sounds of the Hooley Dooley’s latest CD, Roll Up! Roll Up!.

For forty minutes the Hooley Dooleys and their friends will have preschoolers singing and dancing with their lively mix of songs, jokes and music. One of the unique appeals of the Hooley Dooleys is that they talk directly with their listeners, encouraging them to participate. Songs like Stretch and Knee Bopping are easy for kids to join in with simple lyrics and dance movements. They will simply love Circus, a compilation of four separate songs each about a different circus act – the juggler, the clown, the tightrope walker and the magician – interspersed with comments for the ringmaster introducing each act.

Other songs will take children on flights of fantasy – in Zoom, the Hooley Dooleys take a ride in a rocket ship to the moon – or on interesting creatures, such as in Slug and Monkey.

Most youngsters will already be familiar with the Hooley Dooleys – Bruce Thorburn, David Butts and Antoine Dumarest, along with friends Russell the Kangaroo and Tickle the Doodat. Their appeal is reflected in their longevity. They have been together since 1995, with their first album appearing in 1996, with one every since then. They have also produced four videos and four books and also have their own television show on the Foxtel Channel.

The circus theme will be continued in their live shows as they travel Australia appearing at a range of venues. As well, they have got together with the Flying Fruit Circus in their forthcoming Roll Up Roll Up! video, made to complement the album.

Your preschooler will thoroughly enjoy Roll Up! Roll Up!
