DVD Review: The Best Bits of the Late Show (Champagne Edition)
by Sally Murphy

A great treat for fans of The Late Show - all the best bits from both seasons in a double DVD set.

If you were a fan of the Late Show, which aired on the ABC in 1992 and 1993, then you will have long mourned its passing. Since its demise it has not been repeated and, until now, fans have had only distant memories of the show. Now a new release from ABC DVD, The Best Bits of The Late Show: Champagne Edition, fills the void left by this classic show.

This double DVD set includes three volumes of ‘Best Bits’ previously released on individual videos, as well as some previously unreleased footage and other extras.

For those unfamiliar with the Late Show phenomenon, it was a live to air comedy show screened on Saturday nights for forty episodes over two seasons. It was written, presented and performed by some of the greats of Australian comedy: Santo Cilauro, Tom Glesiner, Jane Kennedy, Tony Martin, Mick Molloy, Rob Sitch, Jason Stephens and, in the second series, Judith Lucy. If you did miss seeing these performers in The Late Show, you will have seen them since then in a range of other shows including Frontline and The Panel

As the name would suggest, the Best Bits includes all the best bits of The Late Show. All your favourite clips have been collected for you to revisit and reminisce: Shitscared, Graham and the Colonel, street interviews on important topics like the National Anthem and Best and Worst dressed lists, Santo the Magnificent, Charlie the Wonderdog, Shirty the Slightly Aggressive Bear, the Ozbrothers, the hilarious music finales (including the famous one with Joan Kirner, and so very much more.

As well there is a behind-the-scenes Stills Gallery, providing an inside glimpse at the making of the show and, for die-hard fans, a commentary track where the cast and their special guests spend an amazing six hours discussing the halcyon days of The Late Show.

The set includes a twelve page souvenir booklet with photographs of the commentary recording session.

The Best Bits of the Late Show: Champagne Edition DVD is rated M(15+) and is available from November 19, 2001, from ABC Shops, ABC Centres and good video retailers at a recommended retail price of $59.95.
