DVD Review: Wide World of Sports Cricket Series
by Sally Murphy

Three new DVD titles highlighting many great moments in Australian and world cricket.

With the Aussie cricket team currently in South Africa showing how cricket is played, fans will be interested in three new DVDs from Roadshow Entertainment reflecting on some of cricket’s final moments.

Part of the Wide World of Sports Connoisseur Series, the three Cricket titles, The Vintage Performances, The Modern Masters and The Streak can be purchased individually, but combined would make an excellent addition to any cricket fan’s collection.

The first title, The Vintage Performances showcases outstanding test match and one day performances from some of the real heroes of Australian cricket – from Dennis Lillee and Rod Marsh, to the Waugh brothers and Shane Warne.

Using footage from the Nine Network’s thirty plus years of cricket coverage, as well as interviews and reminiscences from the likes of Richie Benaud, the Chappell brothers and Mark Taylor, the disc revisits such highlights as the history making Centenary Test Match, Mark Taylor’s 334 run innings to equal Don Bradman’s record, the Waugh brothers’ record 464 run partnership and more.

The second title in the series, The Modern Masters, celebrates the careers of the finest modern cricketers. Featured players include batsmen Viv Richards, Greg Chappell, Sachin Tendulkar, the Waugh brothers, Doug Walters and Alan Border, bowlers Dennis Lillee, Malcolm Marshall, Shane Warne and Glen McGarth and all-rounders Richard Hadlee and Ian Botham.

The third and final title, , features the highlights of Australia’s record making 16 test winning streak, from October 199 to March 2001. As well as featuring great moments from the tests, The Streak includes interviews with all the main players in this oustanding team achievement. Individual highlights include Steve Waugh’s five centuries, Shane Warne’s record-making 365th wicket, to break Dennis Lillee’s Australian record, and Justin Langer’s 1174 runs, as well as the debuts of Adam Gilchrist and Brett Lee.

All three titles are available on both VHS and DVD, with the DVD versions including exclusive extra footage.
