DVD Review: The Nugget
Reviewed by Sally Murphy

Being filthy rich is a dirty business.

When three council road workers (played by Eric Bana, Stephen Castle and Dave O'Neil) decide to have a go at prospecting, they strike it rich. Their discovery of the world's biggest gold nugget turns their small town world upside down. It's not long before they realise that it's hard work being filthy rich.

With a cast of familiar Aussie faces - Bana, Curry and O'Neil are joined by Belinda Emmett, Vince Colosimo, Peter Moon, Chris Haywood and Max Cullen - and hints of down-home Aussie humour, this is a film with a potential to be a classic Aussie film, alongside the likes of The Dish. Unfortunately, it doesn't quite have the same success, falling flat in places. The plot suffers from holes and inconsistencies.

What the DVD version of the film does offer is a load of special features, which are fun to play with and enjoy, including the audio commentary from director Bill Bennett, Bana, Curry and O'Neil, which is often more humorous than the film itself. There are also outtakes and bloopers, as well as interviews with the stars and behind the scenes shots.

Overall, though, be prepared to be underwhelmed by this one.

The Nugget, rated M15+, Roadshow Entertainment.
