DVD Review: 5 Great Rugby Titles
Reviewed by Sally Murphy

When too much rugby is barely enough.

With the World Cup now being played in every city and every loungeroom around Australia, rugby fans are in their element. To allow fans even more rugby moments, ABC Video have released five DVD products to bring the moments of Wallaby Glory onto the small screen.

Rise and Rise of Australian Rugby - The Bledisloe Cup examines the resurgence of Australian Rugby from "easy beats" in the 70s to world champions in 1991. Presented by Peter FitzSimons, the 110-minute program features a 55-minute documentary plus behind-the-scenes tales, and present day interviews with Alan Jones, Mark Ella, Bob Dwyer, Michael Lynach, Nick Farr-Jones and many more.

For those who want more than the single DVD, there is The Ultimate DVD Deluxe Edition which consists of four discs that include the documentary, behind the scenes tales, special features, present day interviews with Alan Jones, Mark Ella, Bob Dwyer and many more, as well as 6 classic Test matches in full.

The third product, The Rise and Rise of Australian Rugby: The Grand Slam , focuses on the rise of Australian Rugby in the years leading up to 1984. In that year an Australian touring Rugby team achieved the elusive Grand Slam, defeating England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland for the first time ever. Presented by Peter FitzSimons, ‘Grand Slam’ features a documentary plus 55 minutes of footage not seen before on television and present day interviews with many rugby international personalities.

Again, there is a deluxe edition. The Grand Slam Deluxe Edition features the documentary, footage, and interviews plus 5 classic matches from the 1984 Wallaby tour.

If all that is not enough, there is the fifth title, Stars of Australian Rugby: Heroes of the Modern Game. From the legendary David Campese and John Eales to the awesome Toutai Kefu and Steve Larkham, the Wallabies have always been blessed with players of rare talent who have lit up the international stage. The Stars of Australian Rugby profiles all these greats and many more in an action-packed 90-minute program available on video and DVD.

The program also contains detailed analyses of our heroes' careers, stats and attributes in a series of 15 bonus featurettes with a close look at what makes them the best of the best. The players featured are Campese, Horan, Kearns, Eales, Gregan, Larkham, Tune, Roff, Kefu, Burke, Little, Wilson, Finegan, Smith and Herbert.

A boon for Rugby lovers.

All titles produced by ABC DVD and available from ABC shops and other good DVD outlets.
