Positive Spin, a group of psychologists, educators and performers, have produced a cd aimed at improving the social and emotional well being of children. Produced as a resource for educators and others who work with children and young people, Innov8 contains eight tracks focussing on various issues which kids face. With songs such as "No Bullies Here" about assertiveness and bullying, "Other People" about fighting depression and "Breathe Deep" about combating anxiety, the album offers insight and advice for kids using a variety of different musical styles. There are boppy 'pop' style tunes, likely to appeal more to girls, grungy hiphop songs likely to appeal to boys, and even a country music style number. This is not just a cd to listen to - there is loads of encouragement to join in. Every number is included on the cd twice - once with vocals and again as a karaoke number, with lyrics avaialable on the Positive Spin website. Kids are also encouraged to have a go at adding more verses or to use the karaoke music as a backing for totally new songs on other issues. This is an excellent alternative way for teachers to explore these issues and promote the well being of their students.
