CD Review: When I Grow Up
Reviewed by Magdalena Ball

A collection of fun songs for the imagination..

This CD contains 17 songs on the topic of growing up. Most of them will be familiar to young children and cover professions like a builder, a postman, a musician, Fisherman, a sailor, a Fireman, or a Doctor. The songs vary from television tunes like Bob the Builder and Postman Pat, to traditional nursery rhymes like “The Muffin Man” or “A Sailor Went to Sea” Enthusiastic parents can use this CD in conjunction with a discussion about professions, growing up, or what children want to be, maybe following up with a visit to a parents or friend‘s office or work place. There are many opportunities for doing actions with songs like “Miss Polly,” and “Johnny Works with One Hammer,” as well as danceable tunes like “Bob the Builder and “Fireman Sam.”

There is just one song which is rather irritating-- “I Work in a Button Factory,” but otherwise these are nice versions (I think I prefer Genni Kane’s Bob the Builder to Neil Morrissey’s) of mostly familiar songs with a good balance of sounds and beats, and some thought provoking lyrics.

The CD features familiar and accessible vocals from the ubiquitous Genni Kane and Mark Walmsley with help from Kristina Visocci, and producer John Kane. There are lots of special effects from whistles and bells to fire engine sounds. This is a nice themed CD with lots of different ideas for growing children to consider and play act. Of course children don’t have to just stick with what they want to be when they grow up. This CD is a good stimulus for playacting--with a few props, children can pretend to be bakers, firemen, builders, farmers, railroad workers, and musicians, swapping and trying out different roles.
