Young Adult Book Review: Pool, by Justin D'Ath
Reviewed by Sally Murphy

An absorbing read.

The blind girl was lying where she always did, in the shade of the big peppercorn that leaned in over the fence from the car park. Wolfgang zigzagged through the towels and bodies and babies’ pushers towards her.
‘Excuse me. There’s a butterfly on you.’

Wolfgang is obsessed with butterflies. He hunts them. Observes them and collects them. He loves their colours and shapes, and even thinks he may have discovered a new butterfly species. But when he meets Audrey he doesn’t expect her to share his passion. After all, what would a blind girl know about butterflies?

But Wolfgang and Audrey do find plenty in common, meeting each day at the pool where Wolfgang has taken a summer job and Audrey spends most of her days lying on a towel. The pool is reputed to have magic healing qualities and draws tourists from around the world, many hoping for a cure, others just wanting to a marvel at a pool with water that defies gravity by sloping downwards. As Wolfgang gets to know Audrey he finds that she is somehow linked with the mystery of the pool.

Pool is an intriguing young adult novel with elements of fantasy. The character-driven story offers insight into the life of a teenage boy who is in many ways different from others – with a hare lip, his interest in butterflies, and an ageing, senile father – yet in many ways just a typical teenage boy, with insecurities, mates, and a desire to fit in.

Wolfgang is a likeable character though at times his actions are selfish or questionable, and Audrey, too, is likeable though at times elusive – because she is elusive to Wolfgang, the viewpoint character. There are some weighty issues explored here – life beyond death, religious faiths, disabilities, and parental relationships among them – but the issues don’t overshadow what is also an absorbing story.

From new imprint Ford Street Publishing, Pool will appeal to readers aged 13 and over.
